For three hundred years the Fallowmeres have kept an old book of roads and asked it no questions. The pass over the mountains has been sealed in ice for as long as anyone remembers, and the country beyond is said to be empty. Now the ice is breaking, and something is walking east along the old road, dragging a chain. Wren Fallowmere keeps bees, plays the fiddle at weddings, and has never been further than the next valley; she has just learned what the family book can do in the right hand, and what it takes from whoever writes in it.
